Lalit narayan mithila university, Darbhanga B.Sc. part-1 botany honours syllabus (paper-I and paper-II)

Cryptogames
There shall be rwo theory papers carrying 75 marks each and one practical paper carrying 50 marks. All the three paper shall of three hour duration.
(Thallophyta) 
There shall be three groups consisting of algae, mycology and plytopathology and microbiolgy. Altogether ten questions are to be set. Candidates shall be required to answer five questions selecting atleast one from each group. Question No. 1 will be of slort answer type and compulsory.
Group-A (algae)
1. General Account.
2. Classification of Algae by Fritsch.
3. Range of thallus structure.
4. General Account of following classes with sp, ref. to general mentioned NOSTOC.
     (a) Cyanophyceae : Anabaena
     (b) Chlorophyceae : Oedogonium, Chara
     (c) Xanthophyceae : Vaucheria
     (d) Phaeophyceae : Fucus
     (e) Rhodophyceae : Polysiphonia
5. Economic importance of Algae.
Group-B (My cology and Phytopathology) 
1. General account and classification of Fungi.
2. Life history and Economic importance of following genera :
    (a) Synchytrium
    (b)Phytophthora
    (c) Cystopus (Albugo)
    (d)Puccinia
    (e) Alternaria
3. A brief idea of the following :
    (a) Inoculum
    (b) Infection 
    (c) Symptoms
    (d)Disease cycle
    (e) Koch's postulates
    (f) Mycotoxin
    (g)Disease control (Chemical only)
4. Disease caused by virus and Bacteria Tobacco Mosaic. citrus canker.
5. Economic importance of fungi.
Group-C (Microbiology) 
1. Ultrastructure of Bacterial cell.
2. Cyanobacteria
3. Multiplication of Bacteria
4. Genetic re combination in Bacteria.
5. Nature, properties and structure of viruses. TMV and Bacteriophage.
6. Role of bacteria in agriculture and industries. N, fixation by cyanobacteria.
7. Bacteria and Human Health.
Paper-II
There shall be two groups. Altogether 10 questions are to be set. Candidates shall be required to answer five questions selecting atleast one from each group. Question No. 1 will be of short answer type and compulsory.

1. General Account
2. Evolution of gametophyte.
3. General account of the following genera with ref. to development and structure of their sporophyte.
    (a) Marchantia
    (b)Anthoceros
    (c) Sphagnum
    (d)Polytrichum
Group-B (Pteridophyta) 
1. Stelar organisation.
2. Telome concept.
3. Heterospory and evolution of seed habit.
4. Morphology, anatomy and Reproduction of
    (a) Psilotum
    (b)Lycopodium
    (c) Equisetum
    (d)Ophioglossum
5. Fossil Genera :
    (a) Rhynia
    (b) Calamites

Practical Honours

1. Temporary stained microscopic preparation of materials belonging to groups as prescribed in syllabus :   4×5=20
    (a)Algae
    (b) Fungi
    (c)Bryophytes
    (d)Pteriodophytes
2. Isolation of Fungi from diseased plant material. 04
3. Study of working of following instruments: 03
    (i) incubator 
    (ii) Hot air oven
    (iii) Autoclave
4. study of symptoms. identification of causal organism and host of the diseased plant specimen supplied.     03
5. Spotting          10
    (b) Fungi (a) Algae
    (c) Bryophytes
    (d) Pteriodophytes
    (e) Plant Pathology
6. Practical Records and viva voce.  10
